Back in 1989, a new color of tourmaline was discovered in the state of Paraiba, Brazil—a breathtaking neon blue/green/teal hue. This rare gem was sold for as much as $15,000 per carat, and it was incredibly rare, gorgeous, and intense. Now, it’s pretty much gone — with only small pockets still being mined in Paraiba, Nigeria, and Madagascar, but they’re heavily occluded and quite expensive. So, what is Paraiba Topaz? To be clear, this stone is a look-alike of the Paraiba Tourmaline. It’s natural, mined directly from the ground, but it has been enhanced to achieve that stunning color. In the late '90s and early 2000s, a small California company developed a method to treat Topaz to look like London Blue Topaz—without the expense of nuclear treatment—by baking a chemical into the skin of the stone under high heat and pressure. The stones often turned out too green, but a clever person realized it looked very much like Paraiba Tourmaline, and a market was born for this “Too green for London Blue Topaz” style. We use the term "Paraiba" as a color descriptor because no other phrase captures it better. With a color so unique, there’s truly nothing else like it. This 3.3-carat stone is well cut, clean, and clear, with tons of bright, sparkly teal fire. It’s impressive to look at—and I get goosebumps just thinking about it. In plain English, this is simply a very pretty stone, well mounted in a classic 14K pendant with a simple basket setting. This pendant is one of the nicest we make, and you’ll be proud to wear it. Add this gorgeous Paraiba Topaz Pendant to your collection today and enjoy a truly stunning piece that will catch everyone’s eye!
