While this topaz is natural, having been mined from the ground, it has been enhanced to achieve its vibrant color. In the late '90s and early 2000s, a small company in California developed a method to treat topaz to resemble London Blue Topaz without the high costs of nuclear treatment. They baked a chemical into the skin of the topaz using extremely high heat and pressure. Initially, the stones had a hue that was too green, but one savvy individual realized they resembled Paraiba Tourmaline, and voilà—a market was created for their "too green for London Blue Topaz" experiment. We use the term "Paraiba" as a unique color descriptor, as no other term better captures the stone's essence.
