They used extreme heat and pressure to bake a chemical into the skin of the topaz. Initially, this resulted in stones that were too green, but eventually, someone realized they closely resembled the bright hues of Paraiba Tourmaline. Hence, a market was born for these "too green for London Blue Topaz" gems. We use the term "Paraiba" as a unique color descriptor because no other term captures the essence of these amazing stones.
