It was rare, gorgeous, and intense, but now it's pretty much gone. While there are small pockets of this color being mined in Paraiba, Nigeria, and Madagascar, they’re heavily occluded and quite expensive. So, what is Paraiba Topaz? Let me make it clear that this topaz is merely a look-alike of the Paraiba Tourmaline. While it is a natural stone, having been mined from the ground, it has been enhanced for its vivid color. In the late '90s and early 2000s, a small company in California developed a method of treating topaz to mimic London Blue Topaz without the high costs associated with nuclear treatment. Although the treatment sometimes yielded stones that were too green, one innovative mind recognized that they resembled the Paraiba Tourmaline, leading to the creation of a unique market for this beautiful color descriptor.
