How the latest estimates compare

Estimated apparent consumption fell from $17.6 billion in 2024 to $9.3 billion in 2025. Over the same period, estimated imports for consumption moved from $19.6 billion to $11 billion. The U.S. Geological Survey reports 99% net import reliance in every year from 2021 through 2025.

These are market-level figures, not a measure of the quality, craftsmanship, or value of any individual piece of jewelry. A finished piece brings together the stone, metal, design, and the work of the maker.

Methodology and sources

All figures on this page come from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, Gemstones. The release covers 2021 through 2025 and lists data in millions of U.S. dollars unless otherwise noted. The 2025 values are estimates based on available industry data and research.

For its apparent-consumption figure, the source uses natural and laboratory-created production plus imports, minus exports. Its natural-production figure is an estimated minimum and includes freshwater shell. Trade figures are for imports for consumption and exports excluding reexports.
